Yr 10 - Mojo Cover Analysis Prep

As shown in the example of a Mojo magazine above, the featured artists on the front page are always shown in a serious, legendary light – for example, John Lennon on the example cover is shown staring directly at the camera, centre-stage in the cluttered layout of the cover, and the design perfectly placed so that his face is untouched and uncovered, allowing it to be the centrepiece which attracts the reader to the layout.

This creates an iconic and esteemed view of the artist, as they are lit up with an offstage, harsh light which boasts their recognisable features – plus the magazine even places them in front of their own masthead – a true sign of respect and awe, while being recognisable enough to have readers know exactly what magazine they have in their possession.

Yr 10 - News (Print and Online): Industry and Audience Questions

1. The Guardian/Observer are owned by the Scott Trust, which safeguards their journalistic freedom and liberal values, so that they remain free from political and commercial interference.

2a)'Free press' is the principle that communication and expression in media is a right to be exercised freely.
b)After seeing what they did, it led to the Leveson Inquiry which "recommended that the press should regulate itself with a body that could levy substantial fines, but that this body would have to be recognised by another body set up by parliament."

3. It means that it keeps the original elements of the newspaper - headlines, photography and so on - but have things like embedded videos and publicly viewable comments from readers.

4. The Observer appeals to different readers by having different sections offering different content and opinions - for example, the 'main section' is filled with a mixture of 'hard' news and opinion pieces which appeal to the 'news hungry reader', whereas the New Review consists of more comedic opinion pieces and reviews of the arts, which appeals to the 'culture consumer'.

5. The Observer offers a range of opinions and attitudes to appeal to different readers, not being specific or aimed at a particular political or social group, giving people a sense of recognition and identity in the market.

6. Since the Observer offers different political and general opinions to serve different readers, each reader will interpret news a different way, whether they accept it or challenge it, making them an 'active' audience.

Yr 10 - Lego Movie Video Game - Q8

One use or gratification could include the desire for entertainment from the player, in which video games meet that requirement by providing inclusive and involving action and content - part of the reason why video games exist in the first place. An example could by the 'Lego Movie Video Game', which entertains the viewer with fast paced action, thought-requiring puzzles and colourful, warm scenery - including the 'mission' system which allows the player to move from one task to the next - one involving scene to the other. This way, a video game is able to entertain the player into continuously playing the game and genuinely enjoying it, satisfying the desire for entertainment in the player.

Another use or gratification would include the desire for emotional attachment or connection between the player and the game, and video games satisfy that desire by providing relatable and interesting characters and situations. For example, the 'Lego Movie Video Game's protagonist is a very ordinary, very simple man called 'Emmett', who is psychologically constructed to be the most ordinary character in every way, making him relatable in the sense that he knows he is no hero, but that he still believes that he can make a difference. This creates a likeable enough character to have at least a small amount of emotional connection with the player - and likeable, relatable characters not only appeal to the player's desire for emotional attachment/connection, but also back into their desire for entertainment, as we get to see character act and react to and with each other.

In conclusion, video games are able to satisfy a player desires for entertainment, emotional attachment and more by providing relatable, fun characters and involving scenes and interactions.

Yr 10 - Lego Movie Ad Questions

1. Their desire to work with the brand is intense, and they are determined enough to even pay for the production themselves. Not only does this increase relations between the brands, and creates an iconic relationship through the entirely Lego Ad Break, but it actually increases the brands reputation and look to the viewers and public.

2. Yes, this was definitely a conscious decision from the marketing team, as it not only promotes the iconic style and the movie itself, but it allows the movie to support the sponsoring brands more actively, in recreating their ads in its own style.

3.It retains the brand identity of the film by including a popular character or one voiced by a popular actor, and without the movie's promotion at the end of each ad, it would just seem like an ad sponsored by Lego, not the Lego Movie itself. It keeps the underlying promotional message by doing this, and reminding the audience throughout this ad break what popular figures are in the movie, and what large foundations are sponsoring it.
